How a Handheld Blood Analyzer is Transforming His Life
At the Raymond A. Wood Foundation, we are committed to providing support and resources to survivors of hypothalamic-pituitary brain tumors. One of the essential tools in managing the challenges associated with these conditions is the handheld blood analyzer, which allows for real-time monitoring of blood sodium levels for patients who suffer from arginine vasopressin deficiency (AVP-D) which can be caused by the tumor or treatment of the tumor. Today, we share the inspiring story of Levi, our latest recipient of this life-changing device.
Meet Levi Shepard
Levi is a vibrant 6-year-old (soon to be 7 in August) who has a passion for space and dreams of becoming an astronaut. From a young age, Levi was fascinated with planets and often talked about visiting Mars to see the volcanoes. He is known for his silly, sweet nature and his love for socializing and making people laugh.
A Challenging Journey
Levi was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma on December 24, 2022. Since then, his journey has been filled with ups and downs. Managing his sodium levels has been incredibly challenging, and the family has had to face constant bad news. Despite undergoing two debulking surgeries, Levi’s tumor has continued to grow, leading to multiple treatments. During his first emergency surgery, Levi suffered two minor strokes, causing him to lose all his skills and forcing him to start from scratch, relearning everything.
The Impact of the Handheld Blood Analyzer
For Levi and his family, the handheld blood analyzer is a beacon of hope. This device allows them to manage his daily fluid restrictions without the constant need to drive to the hospital and access his port. Levi has been hospitalized multiple times due to sodium fluctuations, which are hard to detect without laboratory tests because he lacks a thirst drive and cannot drink water on his own. The handheld blood analyzer enables Levi’s family to monitor his sodium levels at home, preventing hospital visits and ensuring more stable management of his condition.
A New Chapter in Health Management
With the handheld blood analyzer, Levi’s family can now better manage his health from the comfort of their home. This device not only reduces the need for frequent hospital visits but also provides peace of mind, knowing they can quickly and accurately check Levi’s sodium levels. This technology is a game-changer, making a significant difference in their daily lives.
The Importance of Community Support
Levi’s journey highlights the critical role that community support plays in providing these essential tools. Donations, volunteer efforts, and advocacy make it possible for us to offer life-changing devices like the handheld blood analyzer to families in need. Your contributions help improve the quality of life for brain tumor survivors and their families, one device at a time.
Heartfelt Gratitude
Levi’s family shares their deep appreciation: “This will make a huge difference for our son as we continue to manage his sodium since he can’t speak or express how he feels.”
Looking Ahead
As we continue our mission, we are dedicated to expanding our reach and supporting more individuals like Levi. Each story of resilience and hope motivates us to keep pushing forward, ensuring that every survivor has access to the resources they need.
