Cette affection peut se traduire par une faim incontr\u00f4lable et une prise de poids chez les patients \u00e0 la suite d'une l\u00e9sion de l'hypothalamus, qui est le centre de contr\u00f4le de la faim et de la soif. Lorsque ce m\u00e9canisme est endommag\u00e9, l'organisme peut \u00eatre amen\u00e9 \u00e0 se mettre en mode famine, ce qui fait que le patient a constamment faim alors que l'organisme stocke les calories sous forme de graisse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Cette maladie est rare et de nombreuses \u00e9tudes sugg\u00e8rent qu'elle ne peut pas \u00eatre trait\u00e9e, ce qui laisse les patients et les familles sans espoir de r\u00e9ponse, comme l'explique Marci Serota. Elle cherchait d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9ment \u00e0 soulager l'HO de son fils lorsque sa prise de poids incontr\u00f4lable a provoqu\u00e9 des signes pr\u00e9coces de st\u00e9atose h\u00e9patique \u00e0 l'\u00e2ge de 9 ans, \u00e0 la suite de l\u00e9sions hypothalamiques caus\u00e9es par un craniopharyngiome. En tant que di\u00e9t\u00e9ticienne agr\u00e9\u00e9e, elle a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 qu'elle devait trouver un moyen d'essayer de vaincre cette maladie et a mis au point un plan de nutrition bas\u00e9 sur la r\u00e9duction des glucides et des aliments entiers non transform\u00e9s.
