It can happen when the body does not have enough cortisol to respond to illness, injury, vomiting, surgery, or another significant physical stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing the signs of adrenal crisis and knowing how to give an emergency hydrocortisone injection can save a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suspect an adrenal crisis?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Give the prescribed emergency hydrocortisone injection immediately and call 911.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell emergency responders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThis person has adrenal insufficiency, is steroid-dependent, and may be having an adrenal crisis.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not delay emergency treatment while waiting to see whether symptoms improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Possible signs of adrenal crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Severe weakness or sudden worsening of symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nausea or repeated vomiting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe abdominal or other pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dizziness, fainting, or very low blood pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confusion, unusual sleepiness, or difficulty responding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dehydration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever, chills, or severe illness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collapse or loss of consciousness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low blood sugar, particularly in children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms can vary from person to person. Other hydrocortisone products may require different preparation steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you will need<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your emergency kit may contain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solu-Cortef ACT-O-VIAL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Syringe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appropriate needle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alcohol wipe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The patient&#8217;s emergency dosing instructions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical identification or steroid emergency information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Check your kit regularly and replace expired supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing the ACT-O-VIAL<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Activate the vial.<\/strong><br>Press firmly down on the plastic activator at the top of the vial. This releases the liquid into the compartment containing the medication powder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Mix the medication.<\/strong><br>Gently swirl or agitate the vial until the powder has completely dissolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Remove the plastic tab.<\/strong><br>Remove the plastic covering over the center of the rubber stopper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Clean the stopper.<\/strong><br>Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol wipe, when available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Attach the needle and syringe.<\/strong><br>Remove the needle cover and insert the needle straight through the center of the rubber stopper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Withdraw the prescribed dose.<\/strong><br>Turn the vial upside down while keeping the needle inside the vial. Pull back on the syringe plunger and withdraw the amount prescribed in the patient&#8217;s emergency plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before giving the injection, make sure you are following the patient&#8217;s prescribed dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giving the intramuscular injection<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For emergency self- or caregiver administration, Solu-Cortef may be given into a large muscle. Pfizer&#8217;s patient information identifies the thigh as the preferred location for an emergency intramuscular injection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Expose the outer thigh.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Clean the injection site if an alcohol wipe is available.<\/strong><br>Do not delay an urgently needed injection if cleaning supplies are unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Hold the syringe firmly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Insert the needle into the thigh muscle at approximately a 90-degree angle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Push the plunger down steadily until the prescribed medication has been injected.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Remove the needle and apply gentle pressure to the injection site.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dispose of the needle and syringe safely when possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator emergency hydrocortisone injection is the first step in treating an adrenal crisis\u2014it does <strong>not<\/strong> replace evaluation and treatment in an emergency department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay
